From Quant Curiosity to Forbes 30 Under 30
After completing her master’s degree at New York University’s Stern School of Business, Sahana Athreya found herself drawn to the mathematical foundations of financial markets.
Her graduate degree provided a strong grounding in finance and strategy, but she wanted to go deeper into quantitative models and engineering principles. To supplement her knowledge, she enrolled in the Master of Science in Financial Engineering program at WorldQuant University.
“The program reinforced a disciplined way of thinking,” Sahana says. “I learned to break complex systems into structured problems, test assumptions, and build models that can withstand uncertainty.”
This quantitative mindset became a defining thread in her career. Sahana moved to Wall Street, where she led data science and artificial intelligence initiatives at some of the world’s leading hedge funds. In these roles, she built AI-driven research platforms, developed alternative data analytics capabilities, and led teams designing predictive models used in live investment strategies.
Recognition followed. In 2022 Sahana became a Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree in the finance category. The same year, Rebellion Research named her among the Top Female AI Minds. She has also received multiple leadership and innovation awards, including the CBIZ Women Transforming Business Emerging Leadership Award, Data Science Professional of the Year, and honors from the Economic Club of New York’s Innovation and Social Impact Challenge.
This quant journey started in Bangalore, India, where Sahana was born and raised. She moved to New York in 2016 to start her graduate studies and then stayed to work at Millennium and Eisler Capital. What attracted her to WQU was not only the rigor of the program but also the vision of founder Igor Tulchinsky, who believes in democratizing access to elite quantitative education.
“Talent and curiosity, not geography or privilege, should determine opportunity,” Sahana says.
At WQU, she strengthened her expertise in derivatives, portfolio theory, risk modeling, and computational finance. She will soon take the next step in her career, joining a major global investment bank as Global Head of Data and AI.
Beyond financial markets, Sahana remains closely connected to India, where she founded a company dedicated to addressing national-scale challenges through technology. The organization focuses on expanding healthcare access to rural communities, developing sustainable climate solutions, and advancing responsible AI applications in defense.
Across these efforts, her philosophy remains consistent: Technology should serve society, and innovation should be grounded in responsibility. For Sahana, WorldQuant University played a pivotal role in shaping this journey.
“It strengthened my quantitative foundation, expanded my perspective on global impact, and reinforced a belief that rigorous education can empower individuals to build solutions that matter,” she says.
