From Modest Beginnings, WorldQuant University Learner Finds Opportunity in France
Education represents more than a credential for Modassir Ali, a WorldQuant University alumnus from a modest-income family in India.
“I understood that education was not simply a pathway to a career,” he says. “It was an opportunity to transform lives.”
Growing up in a small town in Bihar, one of India’s most economically challenged states, he saw firsthand how limited access to education can hold people back. Today, as an aspiring AI researcher in France, he is working to ensure that others have greater access to the knowledge and skills that can change their lives.
Modassir’s educational journey started with an early interest in mathematics and problem-solving. He earned a gold medal in mathematics in Class 8 through the Indian Mathematical Olympiad and later qualified for both medical and engineering entrance examinations. He chose engineering, earning a bachelor’s degree in computer science and engineering.
During his undergraduate studies, he participated in national-level hackathons and coding competitions hosted by institutions like India's National Institutes of Technology and the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru.
Beyond academics, Modassir sought opportunities to put his technical knowledge to practical use. He volunteered with government organizations, orphanages, and local government schools. One particularly meaningful initiative involved helping establish digital libraries that gave students access to educational resources they otherwise might not have been able to afford.
His commitment to academic advancement eventually brought him to France, where he gained admission to Université Paris-Saclay. He is now in his final year of a Master of Science in Engineering program with an emphasis in artificial intelligence.
Along the way, Modassir completed the Data Science Lab and Deep Learning Fundamentals Lab at WorldQuant University to boost his technical knowledge. Through hands-on projects and real-world datasets, he strengthened his understanding of data science, machine learning, predictive modeling, neural networks, and deep learning using PyTorch.
“Working on real-world datasets and end-to-end projects helped me bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical implementation,” Modassir says. “These experiences strengthened my ability to approach research problems systematically.”
Modassir appreciated the free, online, high-quality instruction. He now gives back by sharing his knowledge with other learners.
“My definition of success is not just how far I go, but how many people I can help move forward along the way,” he says.
