Quest for knowledge has taken Yogesh Kumar far. He was born in Pakistan, studied mathematics in Hungary, and is now preparing for a graduate program in quantitative finance at the University of Vienna in Austria. The Applied Data Science Lab at WorldQuant University is helping him get ready.

“I wanted to move beyond theory and build practical skills,” Yogesh says. “When I came across WorldQuant University, what immediately stood out to me was the Applied Data Science Lab. The program is built around hands-on, end-to-end projects using real datasets.”

During the free, 16-week, online certificate program, Yogesh has been able to clean and analyze data, build predictive models, and communicate insights using tools like Python and data visualization libraries.

“This practical approach is helping me understand how data science works in real-world settings,” he says. “It gives me the confidence to apply these skills independently. Even without prior industry experience, I saw it as a powerful way to build a meaningful portfolio and strengthen my technical foundation.”

Kumar is not keeping the knowledge to himself. He shares his takeaways on LinkedIn after completing each self-paced project.

“What I appreciate most is how structured and practical the program is,” he says. “The courses are organized in a logical progression, making complex topics accessible, especially for someone transitioning from a pure mathematics background.”

After finishing the Master of Science in Quantitative Finance program in Austria, Yogesh hopes to become a data scientist in the financial industry.

“I want to combine my strong mathematical foundation with applied data science skills to solve meaningful and impactful financial problems,” he says.
